Improving visual comfort through physically accurate glare simulation
- Where: Copenhagen, Danemark
- When: 25-27 June 2025
- Talk 26th June
At EGSR 2025, Eclat Digital will present its workflow for glare simulation and visual comfort analysis using Ocean™, our optical simulation software.
📅 Presentation date: Thursday, June 26, 11:45
📍 Talk title: From Optical Measurement to Visual Comfort Analysis: a Complete Simulation Workflow with Ocean™’s Glare Map Post-Processing
Discomfort glare can impair visual performance, well-being, and safety — especially in office spaces, public environments, or transportation hubs. Our new Glare Map tool enables accurate, fast, and actionable glare evaluation, directly from spectral rendering simulations.

What is Ocean™'s Glare Map?
Ocean™ computes standard glare indices — UGR (Unified Glare Rating), DGP (Daylight Glare Probability), and GR (Glare Rating) — as a post-processing step from spectral global illumination, eliminating the need for additional render passes.
Key features:
- Per-light-source glare analysis for fine-grained design decisions
- Fast, post-render computation from spectral simulation results
- Accurate modeling of material effects on glare, such as reflectivity, translucency, and finish
- Integration into a unified workflow from optical measurement to visual perception
See it in action: Three real-world case studies
The paper highlights three case studies in which glare simulation was used effectively.
- Open-plan office lighting optimization
- Glare control in architectural daylighting
- Surface material evaluation for glare reduction
These examples demonstrate how changing lighting setups or material properties affects glare levels — enabling design teams to adjust and validate their choices with confidence.

Why it matters
Glare simulation with Ocean™ combines measured optics, spectral rendering, and perceptual metrics — offering a comprehensive toolset for lighting designers, material engineers, and architectural consultants.
By integrating real-world measurements with rendering and analysis, teams can reduce trial-and-error, improve visual outcomes, and deliver safer, more comfortable environments.
